The new English master at Gledhill Comprehensive, Matthew Beech, was a young, sympathetic and a brilliant teacher. The boys were impressed and the girls fell in love en masse. Only pretty, clever Lyn Mellor held aloof, in her usual detached fashion - which was partly a reaction against her too responsive mother. Clare Mellor was kindly, charming and apt to take a drink too many when she went to the pub with her friends in the local amateur dramatic society. Gossip said that Matthew was greatly taken with her, and Clare herself seemed to believe it. But Lyn had reason to think differently.
